When I say “tripping” I mean it as a metaphor.  I was on a “path” of recovery for 8 years while attending 12-step meetings of NA – Narcotics Anonymous and AA – Alcoholic’s Anonymous, but I kept relapsing almost every year!  I would do the “walk of shame” at the next meeting to get my 24-hour chip until I had a drawer full of chips, but I still kept relapsing.

It wasn’t until I went to my 3rd funeral in three months that I realized it was just going to be a matter of time before it was my funeral.  I didn’t really want to die, even though I was slowly killing myself every day.  I really wanted to stop drinking & drugging, but I had no idea how that was ever going to happen for me.

In 2018, after my 9th or 10th relapse in 8-9 years, I decided to start looking for a more secular (evidence based) program that could possibly help me and others in my community who weren’t resonating with the 12-step shame-based doctrine.

I found a program called SMART (Self Management And Recovery Training).  I attended online meetings for 3 months and decided I wanted to become a facilitator so I could bring the meetings to my community.  I’ve maintained my freedom from addictions ever since.

It doesn’t matter how much you trip or slip on the path of recovery.  Just get back on and keep heading in the direction you want to go!
